Nova Scotia Car Insurance

Private insurance companies in Nova Scotia offer many types of insurance policies. What are some of the things you have to consider when buying insurance?

Government regulation

Like other Canadian provinces, Nova Scotia also has a government-mandated car insurance that every resident must have. Without this, a car owner cannot register his or her car.

Third-party liability coverage amounts to $500,000 for each accident. The insurance company will also shoulder medical expenses up to $25,000 per person with a limit of 4 years. Funeral expenses are also covered up to $1,000. If you become partially disabled by the accident, income replacement benefit will last up to 104 weeks. But if it is total disability, income replacement benefit will last for a lifetime. This has a maximum amount of $140 per week. Death benefits include the following: $10,000 for death of the head of the family plus $1,000 for every surviving dependent; $10,000 for the death of a spouse; and $2,000 for the death of a dependent. These are the benefits included in all government-mandated minimum car insurance plans in Nova Scotia.

Optional car insurance

On the contrary, many residents of Nova Scotia feel that they must receive more in cases of an accident. Or there are certain cases that are not included in the mandatory car insurance. Because of this fact, optional car insurance is also bought. For example, if your place is frequented by typhoons or storms, you can buy optional car insurance to cover for expenses in case a typhoon damages your vehicle. Or you can look for a policy that can increase your medical and death benefits.
