Speeding up Car Insurance Claims

Let's face it - No car owner 'wants' to get in an accident; moreso to be bogged by the complications of insurance claims. To speed up such claims, it is important that the car owner, through his or her insurance agent, knows the procedure and documentary requirements that come with insurance claims.

The procedure

- After an accident, contact 911 and seek medical help if needed.

- Report the accident to the police.

- Have the police get statements from the parties involved for the appropriate preparation and filing of a police report.

- In the event that the police are not available, prepare an affidavit discussing the details of the accident.

- In the case of another party involved, get details of the driver of the other party and details of his insurance policy.

- Contact your insurance agent.

- Take pictures of the damage sustained in the accident.

- Get an estimate of the cost of repair from accredited repair shops.

- Submit all of these documents to the insurance agent for submission to the insurance company.

- Do not submit incomplete or false information and documents.

- Conform to all the requirements at the soonest time possible so that the issue on late claims is avoided.

- Cooperate with the adjuster.

The insurance company’s role

As the insurance company has an obligation to its policyholders, it should endeavor to speed up the settlement of claims. It should have its adjusters, examiners and investigators available to validate and process claims. While it of course endeavors to minimize its cost, it should not shortchange its clients. It should always aim to give the best service that its clients deserve. The earlier a claim is settled correctly, the better it is for the car owner and the insurance company.
